Primary School no. 1 is the oldest school in Łódź. Its story is quite an important part of the history of education in Łódź and a small part of Poland’s history. In the school year 1997/98 we had a great JUBILEE –190th anniversary of our School. It was also the Adam Mickiewicz Year – so we had a double occasion to celebrate.
 Our motto:
‘A man reveals his mind not as much in answers, as in questions’ by Aleksander Świętochowski.

  • Primary School no. 1 has 517 pupils in 19 classes. The teaching staff consists of 38 highly qualified teachers (11 of them received the highest educational degree). Most of the teachers completed post-graduate studies. They constantly improve their qualifications participating in methodological courses, conferences and workshops.

  • We have 18 classrooms, a gym, a library (6 computers), a canteen and a new computer classroom (11 computers in the local net with access to the Internet). It was opened within the framework of the project ‘The internet classroom in primary school’. Thanks to that, our former computer classroom will be available for activities related to other subjects.

  • The school’s aim is to connect history and tradition with the present day.

  • We co-operate with other European schools.

  • Two years ago we finished a Socrates-Comenius project- ‘From Wood to Wood’ together with schools from Italy, Portugal and Bulgaria. We finished another two-year Socrates-Comenius project –‘My roots – where do I come from?’ together with schools from Italy, Spain and Ireland. Our school was the co-ordinator of the project. More information about the project is available on the website http://www.sp1socrates.szkoły.lodz.pl Now we commence a three-year Socrates-Comenius musical project entitled ‘A trip of harmonies through the notes of history’. Our partners will be schools from Italy and Spain. We also take part in a Socrates Programme educational competition ‘EUROPRODUCT’ .

  • Our school is a member and a cofounder of The Long Tradition European Schools Association (for schools of over 150 years of tradition).

  • The school received the ‘School with class’ certificate. In the year 2004/05 we are joining another CEO project ‘I’m reading’.

  • At our school the Pupils’ Sports Club functions – activities may also be attended by parents.

  • Each year we participate in many European projects, e.g. ‘Spring Day in Europe’.

  • Classes I – III accomplish an innovative programme of European education.

  • We work according to our own educational and preventative programme for the pupils.

  • Computer Studies is an obligatory subject for IVth and Vth classes. The school realises a pedagogical innovation which enlarges the material and uses so- called pro-health, ecological and media / reader educational paths.

  • English lessons are obligatory from the first class.

  • There is a Computer Studies Club at school for classes I – III, Vb and VIth .

  • Artistically talented pupils attend Drama Club and Art Club.

  • Pupils have activities at YMCA swimming pool as part of PE classes.

  • Classes attend the Youth Film Academy at the 'Cytryna' cinema.

  • Pupils watch theatrical performances.

  • There are optional rhythmic / musical activities for classes I – III.

  • The fourth class pupils participate in a bicycle licence course.

  • School organises numerous sightseeing trips and one-week-stays at so-called ‘green schools’.

  • We have fun at discos and carnival balls taking place at the school gym.

  • School organises many competitions in search of ‘young talents’.

  • From the school year 2002/2003 our school is a branch of a dancing and vocal group ‘PĘDZIWIATRY’ www.pedziwiatry.art.pl
